Three illnesses account for 81% of Serious Illness claims

Almost 7,000 DEATHS were registered in Ireland in the third quarter of 2017, according to the Central Statistics Office.

Circulatory system diseases accounted for 2,090 deaths in the third quarter of 2017, Of these deaths, 986 were due to heart disease & 389 deaths were due to cerebrovascular disease such as a stroke.

There were 358 deaths due to dementia, of which 227 (63.4%) were female. There were 129 deaths due to Alzheimer’s disease, of which 83 (64.3%) were female.

During the same period, there were 2,185 deaths from malignant cancers. This is equivalent to an annual rate of 1.8 per 1,000 of the population.

Deaths from chronic lower respiratory disease numbered 328, while pneumonia accounted for 215 deaths and 276 deaths resulted from all other respiratory diseases.

This puts into perspective how important Serious Illness Protection should be, in regards to leaving something behind for family or a loved one, whether it be a standalone policy, or added on to your Life Insurance or Mortgage Protection.

There were 324 deaths due to accidents, suicides and other external causes. Accidents accounted for 72.2% of these deaths, while suicides accounted for 24.4%. Of these 79 deaths, 81% were male.

This should also put into perspective how important Life Insurance and Mortgage Protection can be. Is there enough money to cover your family’s expenses for at least a year? Is there enough to pay off any of your existing bills? Do you need to increase your current cover?
